Groundbreaking ceremony

An official ceremony took place on 23rd October 2008 as construction work began at a new Italmaceri site in Novara, Italy. Attendees at the event included Luigi Pelletti, Managing Director of M-Dis, Matteo Cattaneo and Sara Moro, Logistic department of unsold media products, Enzo Caldarella, Site Manager of M-Dis, Hans Wortman, Managing Director of SCA Recycling Business Division, Giovanni Malloggi, Managing Director of Italmaceri, the SCA Recycling Network team and management and colleagues of the construction company undertaking the work, Impresa Giulio.

On arrival at the large building site the visitors could see some work had already been undertaken and the foundations for the building laid. The guests were invited to set foot on the site and to walk together to one of the front foundation spots. For safety reasons security ribbons had been placed around a 2 meter deep hole in the ground, this was the first concrete foundation layer, necessary to support the 121 x 56 meter roof which will cover the new 12 meter high building and 9 meters under beam. The total site area is approximately 15,000 sqm. Blueprint diagrams of the building and the location were on display nearby along with a small concrete mixer that was preparing the first bucket of concrete for the laying of the first stone ceremony.

Hans and Giovanni from SCA were invited to climb down a small ladder which had been placed to the side of the foundation footing. Giovanni was then given a new trowel especially for the occasion, a builder emptied a bucket of concrete for Giovanni to prepare the first round brick for the building. Once this was made Giovanni inscribed the brick with a nail, writing the date 23.10.2008 in the wet cement, this was met with a loud applause from the crowd standing nearby.

To celebrate the days events all participants then went to lunch at a local restaurant.

SCA team

This new development shows strong confidence by the owners of Italmaceri, SCA and Burgo for further growth opportunities in their joint venture company.  The reasoning for building a new plant in Novara is due to the long term contracts between Italmaceri and M-Dis which were agreed some time ago. M-Dis is the number one distributor of publications in Italy offering services to 70 publishers.

It delivers to 140 local distributors around 900 different publications, that's approximately 1 billion copies a year!  M-Dis major distribution centre is located next to the new Italmaceri site which of course is no coincidence.  Annually M-Dis generates approximately 50,000 tonnes of unsold products such as magazines, newspapers, books, CD’s and DVD’s, a large proportion of this volume is from their Novara facility. Italmaceri is providing an important service to M-Dis to ensure recycled waste produced is securely recycled in the best possible way.

Novara

The new building should be ready during Q2, 2009 after which the processing equipment can be installed, with the new site expected to be up and running around July 2009.
